Newton-le-Willows sits an easy three miles from our Golborne base, a straight run up the A573, so a job over in WA12 is a short hop for us and there is nothing added on for the travel. It is one of the oldest railway towns going, and you can read that in the streets, so we already know our way about, from the market square in Earlestown out to the newer estates ringing the edges.

The housing here is about as mixed as a town gets. Earlestown is rows of solid Victorian terraces with the cars kept at the kerb, Newton town centre and Wargrave run from terraces up to semis with proper drives, and Vulcan Village is the old foundry works housing on its own tight grid of streets. Round the outer edges sit the newer estates, with the driveways and the newer motors parked on them. We arrive fully self contained, carrying our own water and a power supply, so a car stuck at the kerb on a terrace is no harder for us to sort than one sat on a long drive.

The rail links here are good enough that Newton-le-Willows is packed with commuters, and a commuter car earns its grime. The daily station runs, the miles up the M6 at junction 23 and the greasy traffic film off the A49 all settle on the paint and flatten it over the months.
