Atherton is a short run of about five miles from our Golborne base, so booking a car in over in M46 is straightforward, and we do not add anything for the drive across. We know the town well, from the tight streets around Market Street and the old centre to the busier stretch by the retail park at Gibfield and the quieter estates further out, so we already have a good idea where there is room to set up.

The housing is what you would expect of an old cotton and mining town. Rows of terraces sit near the middle around Chowbent where cars live at the kerb, there are plenty of post-war semis with their own driveways, and the newer estates at Hag Fold and Chanters tend to have younger cars on them. The old colliery streets around Howe Bridge and Hindsford are a mix of the two. We bring our own water and power along, so a terraced street with only kerbside space is just as easy for us to work on as a wide private drive.
