Getting the outside of an Atherton car properly clean is only worth doing if it does not put fresh swirls in, which is where a quick sponge over falls down. We soak it down first with a citrus pre-wash and a coat of snow foam, then wash it by hand using two buckets so the grit rinses off the mitt rather than getting dragged over the panels. The wheels are done front and back, the arches are flushed through, and the whole car is dried off by hand afterwards.

The sealant holds for up to 12 weeks, so rain gathers into beads and rolls straight off, the road film thrown up on the daily commute finds it harder to cling on, and every wash after this one takes less doing. The tyres are dressed and the wheels get their own bit of protection, so it looks the part from the wheels up.
